Frequently Asked Questions

What sets EKOPEL 2K Classic, Optimum, and Gold apart?

All EKOPEL 2K materials are designed for resurfacing old bathtubs and are applied using a pouring technique. They create a smooth, thick, and durable surface with excellent adhesion.

EKOPEL 2K Classic cures in about 48 hours and is particularly suitable for DIY enthusiasts due to its longer working time.

EKOPEL 2K Optimum cures in approximately 24 hours and is ideal when the bathtub needs to be back in use sooner.

EKOPEL 2K Gold also cures in around 24 hours and offers enhanced UV protection. If your bathroom has a window or the bathtub is exposed to sunlight, we recommend EKOPEL 2K Gold.

What is the difference between EKOPEL 2K and EKOPEL Roll-On?

EKOPEL 2K is applied using a pouring technique. The material flows evenly over the surface, creating an extra thick, smooth, and glossy coating.

EKOPEL Roll-On is applied in two coats with a roller. It is especially suitable when the drain cannot be disassembled or when a simpler roller application is preferred. Roll-On can also be used on wall and floor tiles.

Is EKOPEL 2K suitable for my bathtub?

EKOPEL 2K is suitable for steel, cast iron, ceramic, fiberglass, and previously coated bathtubs.

For acrylic bathtubs, application is only recommended if the walls are stable and non-flexible. If the surface moves or flexes when pressed, we do not recommend using it.

How much material do I need for a bathtub or shower tray?

For a standard bathtub up to 170 × 80 cm, you will need an EKOPEL 2K set with 2.4 L.

For larger bathtubs, we recommend an additional 1.2 L set.

For shower trays up to 90 × 90 cm, a 1.2 L set is usually sufficient. For larger shower areas, we recommend a 2.4 L set.

What else do I need for the application?

The EKOPEL 2K set already includes the main material and essential accessories.

In addition, you will need masking tape, protective film or paper for the floor, a hairdryer or heat gun, a container with approximately 400-500 ml capacity, tools to remove or open the drain, a knife or cutter, cleaning cloths, and a solvent for cleaning your tools.

We also recommend wearing clothing that can get dirty.

How should the bathroom be prepared?

Before application, thoroughly clean the bathroom. Remove dust from shelves, walls, ceiling, and surfaces to prevent any particles from settling on the new coating.

Take out towels, toiletries, and any loose items from the bathroom. Keep windows closed during application to avoid dust or insects landing on the surface.

The room temperature should be at least +20 °C starting one day before application and throughout the curing process.

How should the bathtub be prepared?

The bathtub must be clean, dry, grease-free, and free of silicone, lime scale, rust, and loose old coating.

All silicone residues must be completely removed, as the coating will not reliably adhere to them. Lime scale deposits, rust spots, and loose old coatings must also be fully removed.

Deep damage, grooves, or chipped areas over 1 mm should be filled with epoxy or polyester filler before coating and then sanded smooth.

How is the material mixed?

Add the entire Component B into the bucket with Component A. Mix the material thoroughly using the supplied wooden stick.

Stir carefully for about 10 minutes to ensure no unmixed residue remains on the bottom or sides. Let the mixture rest for approximately 5 minutes, then stir again for another 5 minutes.

The material is then ready for application.

How is EKOPEL 2K applied?

EKOPEL 2K is applied by pouring, not with a roller or brush.

Use a cup with a capacity of about 400-500 ml and pour the material evenly over the edges and walls of the bathtub. The coating flows slowly downward, spreading smoothly across the surface.

This pouring method creates an exceptionally smooth, thick-layer coating with a high-gloss finish.

Does the drain need to be removed or sealed?

If possible, we recommend removing the drain or at least the drain cover. This allows any excess material to drain off cleanly.

If the drain cannot be removed, the drain opening must be carefully sealed. Cover the opening with paper, firmly tape it down, and carefully cut the tape along the contour.

The overflow should also be removed or carefully taped off.

What temperature is important for application?

The room temperature should be at least +20°C. This temperature should be maintained one day before application, during the process, and throughout curing.

For easier application, we recommend warming Component A to around +30°C before use. For example, place the container in warm water or store it in a warm place a day prior.

Too low temperatures can impair flow properties and significantly extend curing time.

When can the bathtub be used again?

At a room temperature of around +24 °C, the bathtub can be used carefully again after approximately 24 to 48 hours, depending on the product. At around +21 °C, we recommend waiting 2-3 days before using the bathtub. Curing may take longer at lower temperatures. Bottles, soap containers, pets, as well as products containing dyes such as hair colour or coloured bath additives should only be used after approximately 7-14 days.

What to do about drips, dust, insects, or minor damage?

Small dust particles, insects, droplets, or surface irregularities can be carefully treated after curing.

Minor unevenness can be smoothed with fine sandpaper and then polished with polishing paste. For small scratches or damaged areas, we recommend a repair kit.

Deep damage should be repaired as soon as possible to prevent water from seeping under the coating.

How do I clean and maintain the coated bathtub?

Use mild bathroom cleaners without abrasive scrubbers. Cleaners with a gentle acidic base are generally suitable.

Avoid stiff brushes, abrasive sponges, and highly abrasive cleaning agents. Residues from hair dye, coloured bath additives, or cosmetic products should be removed immediately.

Proper care significantly extends the lifespan of the coating.

Is the material hazardous to health or odour-intensive?

EKOPEL 2K is virtually odourless and free from strongly odorous solvents. Any slight smell dissipates quickly.

The product has been tested according to DIN EN 71-3. Nevertheless, we recommend using standard protective gear such as gloves, safety goggles, and ensuring good ventilation during application.

Avoid contact with skin and eyes.

How should waste be disposed of and how should the material be stored?

Cured material can generally be disposed of with household waste. Uncured material residues should be disposed of as hazardous waste.

Liquid leftovers can be mixed together and, once fully cured, disposed of.

Store the material in a dry place, well sealed, and at temperatures between +5 and +35 °C. Shelf life is 2 years from the production date.

How long does the material last, and how durable is the coating?

The material has a shelf life of 2 years from the production date, provided it is stored dry, well sealed, and at temperatures between +5 and +35 °C. The product can be used within this period.

With correct preparation, proper application, and normal maintenance, the new coating can last for many years.

The actual durability depends greatly on surface preparation, application, cleaning, and everyday use.

Can I use EKOPEL 2K in colour?

Yes, EKOPEL 2K can be tinted with compatible EKOPEL colour pastes.

The colour should be added to Component A before mixing with Component B. The required amount depends on the respective colour chart.

Alternatively, pre-tinted options can also be used if available.
